Things I’ve learned as a #writer

  1. You’re going to have a lot of false starts and rewrites. That’s okay! It’s part of the writing process and it ultimately makes the story better.
  2. You are going to have moments you think your writing is garbage. Keep at it. A moment of inspiration will come and you might even transform the garbage into something amazing.
  3. It’s going to take a lot of hard word and dedication. It’s also going to take giving up times of inspiration because something else requires your time and attention. You’re going to have to plod through family dinners or work or grocery shopping when you’d rather be writing.

Remember writing something great is about a series of met opportunities and moments of inspiration. Any one writing session won’t make the difference. It is the complete sum of your effort that creates something special! Have fun!!

Music as a muse

I am a huge music junkie. I cultivate playlists. I love discovering new music. No matter what I am doing, I am probably listening to music at the same time. This is especially true when I am writing. I know some people find music to be distracting when they are engaging in thought activities, but for me it helps set the tone. I believe there is a song to match any mood, any situation. Sometimes music and lyrics better articulate emotion than I ever can. Music has the power to make the listener feel something, to transform emotions, to inspire, to engage – much like words on a page can.

In this spirit, here are five tracks that are currently inspiring my writing:
1. James Vincent McMorrow – “Hear the Noise that Moves So Soft and Low”
2. The Lighthouse and the Whaler – “Little Vessels”
3. The Helio Sequence – “October”
4. Amber Run – “Heaven”
5. The Lonely Wild – “Everything You Need”

Give these a listen. Maybe they will inspire you too!

In honor of Maya Angelou’s always powerful words

“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” – Maya Angelou
